Environmental statistics for Cohesion policies 2014-2020

The final event of the ISPRA project was held on 6 December at Palazzo Merulana in Rome. Environmental statistics for Cohesion policies 2014-2020”, aimed at expanding the set of territorial indicators currently released by public statistics on environmental matters.

As part of the Project, 46 indicators were published, 25 of which were also at municipal level and also several "new" indicators in line with the SDGs of Agenda 2030 and therefore with the methodological indications of the United Nations. The populated indicators are specific for various environmental issues such as: waste, air quality, water quality, atmospheric emissions, contaminated sites (within regional jurisdiction), hydrogeological hazards (landslides and floods), land consumption, fragmentation of the territory and state of conservation of habitats, coastal dynamics.

In addition to the indicators, the true core of the project, activities were also carried out, always preparatory and functional to populating the indicators, but also of their own relevance in terms of dissemination and wider use.

"The project supported the improvement of our information offer. The results include: new indicators, more territorial coverage, new tools such as MOSAIC and HYDROGEOUS ” declared the Director General of ISPRA, Maria Siclari.

"The project strategy is based on the central role of ISPRA: processing and publication of environmental data and indicators is the basis of the definition of territorial policies" explained Stefano Laporta, President of ISPRA.

In particular:

• the platform was created IdroGEO open source and open data, not only for consulting and sharing data, maps, reports and documents on hydrogeological risk, but also to offer an interactive, participatory tool for the population;

• the national database was developed ( MOSAIC ) for sites undergoing remediation;

and from a methodological point of view:

• the structure and "zero" version of a national database of habitats of community interest functional to improving the provision of territorial environmental statistics was created;

• an algorithm was defined for specific and particular automated processing in the field of land consumption which allowed the transition from level II to level III of the classification of land consumption, increasing the offer of environmental indicators on the topic;

• an ad hoc methodology was tested to guarantee the estimate of regional atmospheric emissions every two years;

• the redigitalisation of the Italian coasts was achieved after a decade.

All project outputs (data, metadata and indicators) are published through ISPRA communication channels and in particular a specific section has been allocated for the  Project .
