Environmental indicators database

With a view to improvement and development, to face increasingly pressing environmental challenges and to satisfy new knowledge needs, including future scenarios, it is important to continue to acquire and process detailed statistical information characterized by high scientific solidity, to be disseminated in a dynamic and timely manner. The indicators present in the Environmental Indicators Database not only provide a snapshot of the state of the environment in Italy, clearly reported for more than 20 years first with the Environmental data yearbook , then synthetically with Environment in Italy: an overview but they mark further progress thanks to their peculiarity in supporting the effectiveness and quality of public action, and in responding both to specific regulatory obligations and to requests from national and international bodies.

The database of environmental indicators with over 300 indicators underlines this evolutionary process and represents the most complete collection of statistical data and information on the state of the environment in Italy created and managed by the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) with the help of regional agencies and autonomous provinces within the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA).

The indicators, classified in 40 Environmental issues , are structured into cards containing descriptive information (metadata) such as, for example, the objectives to be achieved, the status assessment, the trend and data represented with graphs, tables and maps.

it is also possible to consult the indicators through different interpretations: from the DPSIR model (Determinants and production sectors (D, P); Environmental conditions (S, P, I); Protection and prevention (I, R)) to the national/European/international core sets currently in place for the monitoring of differently aggregated environmental policies ( Catalog of aggregations ).

To increase the methods of dissemination of environmental information, ISPRA has created some Dashboards of the main environmental indicators which, through the exploration of interactive graphs, allows users to follow the trend over time of the main phenomena represented, verify the effectiveness of environmental performance as well as the progress made towards sustainable development.

Updates and new releases

The database is subject to periodic updates to guarantee an increasingly complete, coherent and timely information base. In 2025, the indicators were published through progressive releases, which enriched and updated contents and historical series:

  • June 30th 2025 - intermediate release of new indicators and updates of available data.
  • September 30th 2025 - further expansion of the information set and integration of new contents for consultation.
  • December 31th 2025 - final release of the year, with the publication of further indicators and the consolidation of the 2025 updates.

The releases contribute to strengthening the capacity of the Database to support analysis, monitoring and evaluation of environmental policies, in line with national knowledge needs and with the main European and international references.
